EV Road Tax in Malaysia: What You Pay in 2026

The new kW-based EV road tax took effect on 1 January 2026, replacing the full exemption that ran from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2025. If you own an EV or plan to buy one, your road tax is now based on motor power. Here's how it works.

How the new system works

  • Road tax is based on your car's motor output in kilowatts (kW).
  • Find your kW on your Vehicle Ownership Certificate (geran) under "Keupayaan Enjin," or in the MyJPJ app.
  • Dual-motor AWD EVs are taxed on combined motor output.
  • No difference between private and company registration (unlike petrol cars).
  • JPJ groups all EVs into 11 power bands.
  • Within each band, there's a base rate plus a small increment (RM 10 to RM 350) for every additional 9.999 kW of motor output.

What you'll pay, by band

Indicative ranges for Peninsular Malaysia. The exact figure for your car depends on its specific motor output.

  • Under 50 kW: RM 20/year. E-bikes, budget EVs.
  • 50 – 100 kW: RM 20 – 70/year. Entry-level city EVs (Neta V, Leapmotor T03).
  • 100 – 210 kW: RM 70 – 280/year. Mainstream to mid-range EVs (BYD Atto 3, BYD Dolphin, Hyundai Ioniq 5 RWD).
  • 210 – 310 kW: RM 280 – 575/year. Crossovers and premium SUVs (BMW iX1, Tesla Model Y RWD, Volvo XC40).
  • 310 – 465 kW: RM 575 – 1,640/year. Performance EVs (Tesla Model 3 Performance LR AWD, BMW i4 M50).
  • 465 – 1,010 kW: RM 1,640 – RM 20,000+/year. Sports EVs and hypercars (Lotus Eletre 900 at 675 kW = RM 4,890).
  • Above 1,010 kW: flat RM 20,000/year. Extreme hypercars (Yangwang U9 Xtreme).

For your exact figure, check your car on the MyJPJ app or at public.jpj.gov.my.

East Malaysia and Labuan

  • Sabah and Sarawak: approximately 70% lower than Peninsular rates.
  • Labuan: 50% of Peninsular rates.

Who's exempt

  • OKU (disabled) owners: one vehicle per owner remains fully exempt, subject to JPJ verification.

How much cheaper than a petrol equivalent

The old pre-2022 engine-displacement formula would have charged a 160 kW EV around RM 1,294/year. Under the new structure, the same EV pays under RM 200/year. For most mainstream EVs, the saving vs. a petrol car of similar performance is in the 50 to 85 per cent range.

When to renew

  • Up to 60 days before expiry.
  • Early renewal doesn't shorten your coverage. The new period starts after the current one ends.
  • Driving with expired road tax is an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987.

Where to check and renew

  • MyJPJ app: most convenient. Digital e-LKM, no sticker needed.
  • MySikap portal at public.jpj.gov.my.
  • Approved agents: MyEG, KeyPlus, Pos Malaysia.
  • JPJ branches and UTC counters for walk-in.

What this means for ownership cost

Low road tax, home charging and solar add up to the cheapest personal transport you can run in Malaysia right now.

  • Road tax: typically RM 70 – 280/year for a mainstream EV.
  • Home charging on TNB tariff: RM 100 – 300/month.
  • Home charging on solar via Solar ATAP: close to zero.

Rates are reviewed every 5 years. The next review falls around 2031.
