Running an EV in Malaysia costs less than running a petrol car. Add solar panels, and the running cost drops close to zero. Here's how it works, what it costs, and how to set it up.
Why solar + EV makes sense here
- An EV adds RM 100 to RM 300 a month to your TNB bill, depending on how much you drive. Cheaper than petrol, but not free.
- Rooftop solar generates the most power during the day, when most homes use the least.
- An EV charger can be set to pull during the day, matching your solar output.
- Result: if your car sits at home during the day, you charge close to free.
Solar ATAP: sell what you don't use back to TNB
Malaysia's Solar ATAP (Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme) launched on 1 January 2026, replacing the older NEM scheme that ended in June 2025.
- Export excess solar power back to the grid during the day.
- Receive credits that offset what you draw at night.
- Residential system cap: 5 kW for single-phase homes, 15 kW for three-phase.
- The contract runs for 10 years. After that, self-consumption only (no more exports or roll-over).
- The more your EV runs on solar during the day, the more you save on both ends of the bill.
Government incentives in 2026
- EV tax relief up to RM 2,500: on home EV charger purchase and installation. Applies to individual income tax, assessment year 2026.
- SuRIA Home solar rebate: RM 600 cashback for every 1 kWac of solar installed, up to RM 3,000. Open to households enrolled in Solar ATAP. Quota is 250 MW nationwide, closing 31 December 2026 or when the quota is used up, whichever comes first. Worth moving on quickly if you qualify.
